Deadly Landslide Strikes Ecuador, Leaving Multiple Fatalities and Missing Persons
At least 16 people were killed and seven remained missing after a massive landslide swept over an Andean community in central Ecuador, burying dozens of homes. The disaster affected 500 people and 163 homes, and destroyed a portion of the Pan-American Highway. More than a dozen rescuers worked to remove debris, and firefighters from half a dozen cities were dispatched to the area to help. The landslide is estimated to be about 150 meters wide and 1 kilometer long, and dragged trees, homes, and other buildings.
