Bills Opener Anthem Backlash: Is O Canada Out of Place at an All-American Game?
The Buffalo Bills’ new Highmark Stadium opened with a performance of O Canada by Barenaked Ladies to honor Canada, a move critics say was unnecessary since no Canadian team was involved and felt like marketing or virtue signaling. The rendition was described as subpar, and the Bills’ Canadian ties and fan base were noted as context. Fox News contributor Joey Jones argued that US national anthems should honor service members, not foreign nations. While some supporters welcomed recognizing Canadian fans, the piece suggests the gesture belonged to the pregame acknowledgment rather than singing a foreign anthem, hoping the Canadian anthem is limited to this opener.
