"US lawmakers urge DOJ to probe Apple over Beeper shutdowns and iMessage exclusivity"

US lawmakers, including Senators Amy Klobuchar and Mike Lee, are urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Apple for potential anticompetitive conduct following the tech giant's attempts to disable Beeper's services. Beeper, which has been working on an iMessage-compatible Android app, has faced challenges from Apple in its efforts to provide the service. The lawmakers argue that Beeper's app poses a threat to Apple's leverage and could create a more competitive mobile applications market. Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky believes that Apple has a monopoly over iMessage and has been fighting to keep Beeper Mini, the Android app, alive. Pressure is also mounting on Apple from outside the US to make iMessage interoperable with other messaging services.

Cramer has requested "unredacted copies" of agreements made with publishers and documents related to its acquisition of Bungie. PlayStation's lobbying against Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard has also been cited as an example of anticompetitive behavior. However, it is unlikely that these calls for transparency will have any significant impact on the ongoing fallout from Microsoft's acquisition.
