"UK Antitrust Regulator Investigates Microsoft's OpenAI Partnership"

The UK's antitrust regulator, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has announced that it will review whether to launch a merger probe into Microsoft's partnership with OpenAI. This comes after the CMA previously looked into competition issues surrounding Microsoft's operations earlier this year. The review will assess whether the partnership has resulted in an "acquisition of control". The CMA will consider recent developments in the governance of OpenAI, including Microsoft's non-voting position on the board. Microsoft has committed to investing over $10 billion into OpenAI and owns 49% of the for-profit operating company. The CMA has invited interested parties to comment on the matter by January 3, 2024.
