Revolutionary Nerve-Stimulation System Restores Arm Mobility for Quadriplegics
Startup Onward Medical has successfully implanted its ARC nerve stimulation therapy system, which uses a brainwave-driven implantable electrode array, in a patient to restore function and feeling to their hands and arms. The ARC system includes both external and implantable versions, with the external version helping regulate bladder control, blood pressure, and limb function. The implantable version, controlled through wearable components and a smartwatch, has previously enabled paralyzed patients to stand and walk short distances. The recent implantation aims to help a patient with a C4 spinal injury regain movement in their arms, hands, and fingers. Onward Medical hopes to commercialize its external spinal cord stimulation solution by the second half of 2024.
