Chinese researchers demonstrated a 1 Gbps optical downlink from geostationary orbit using a 2-watt laser, aided by an AO-MDR receiver that merges adaptive optics and mode-diversity reception to counter atmospheric turbulence, achieving a higher usable signal rate than Starlink in the test conditions.
