106-year-old Indigenous tattooist graces Vogue's cover as oldest ever model.
Apo Whang-Od, a 106-year-old Indigenous tattooist from the Philippines, has become the oldest Vogue cover star after appearing on the Philippine edition of the magazine. Whang-Od is credited with helping to keep alive a form of the art known as batok, which involves tapping the tattoo into the skin by hand using a thorn dipped in soot and natural dye. She has inspired a new generation to learn batok and has imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe on the skin of thousands of people. Whang-Od plans to continue tattooing for as long as her sight allows.
