Meunier’s Sunderland chapter: a Belgian veteran chasing Europe with a city’s heartbeat
Belgian right-back Thomas Meunier, 35, opens up about a globe-trotting career—from a postman and car-windscreen fixer in rural Belgium to Dortmund, PSG and Lille—now joining Sunderland and embracing the city’s passion and the Premier League’s intensity. He explains his late-career positional shift from striker to right-back, the decision to move his family to Wearside, and anticipation of big fixtures vs Arsenal, AZ and Manchester City. He weighs in on the Balogun World Cup controversy and the broader politics of football, arguing that sport reflects society even as he believes football and politics should not be partners. Meunier’s story is a vivid portrait of a veteran seeking to help Sunderland return to Europe.
