California is banning “sell by” labels on packaged foods and requiring standardized dating terms to clarify peak quality versus safety. Beginning July 1, 2026, manufacturers must use either or both the “Best If Used By” (quality) and “Use By” (safety) labels, aiming to reduce food waste and consumer confusion. The policy, which already led New York to consider a similar move, could push a federal standard amid broad industry adjustments, with grocers updating systems while older labels remain on shelves for months.
