Malaysian Leader Urges ASEAN States to Address Myanmar Crisis through Bilateral Engagement
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim suggests that Southeast Asian countries should engage with Myanmar on an individual basis to help resolve the ongoing crisis, while also emphasizing the importance of upholding human rights and addressing the treatment of minorities. Some ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, have been frustrated with Myanmar's lack of cooperation, leading them to take a bilateral approach. Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai has already met with detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi and believes that bilateral engagement is crucial for resolving issues. The military takeover in Myanmar has resulted in deadly chaos, with Western and European governments imposing sanctions and demanding the release of political detainees.
