FDA Approves Spring Boosters and Retires Monovalent Shots for COVID Vaccines.
The FDA has retired the original monovalent COVID-19 mRNA shots and streamlined immunizations for the unvaccinated, offering spring bivalent boosters to those aged 65 and older and people with certain immune compromising conditions. The only mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines authorized and in use in the US will be the bivalent formulations from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech. Unvaccinated adults can now get just a single dose of a bivalent vaccine to complete the primary series, and all primary series doses for children and adults will also be the bivalent shot. Children and adults who have not yet received a dose of the bivalent vaccine as a booster are also eligible to get one.
