Bird flu infects UK poultry workers
Two poultry workers in England have tested positive for bird flu, bringing the total number of human infections recorded in the UK to three. Both workers had recently worked on an infected poultry farm in England, and one case is likely to have breathed in contaminated material. Neither of the workers displayed symptoms of the disease and both are now testing negative. The H5N1 strain of bird flu has killed hundreds of thousands of birds over the past year in an unprecedented global outbreak. Roughly 4,000 black-headed gulls have died in recent weeks at inland sites across the country, more than one per cent of their total population in the UK.
