Coinbase Acquires Stake in Circle, Expanding USDC Reach
Coinbase is acquiring a minority stake in Circle Internet Financial and dissolving their Centre Consortium partnership that governed the USDC stablecoin. Circle will bring the issuance and governance of USDC fully in-house. Additionally, six new blockchains will integrate with USDC, bringing the total number of supported blockchains to 15. The move comes as PayPal introduces its own stablecoin, PYUSD, potentially challenging the dominance of USDT and USDC. Coinbase sees the future of USDC extending beyond crypto trading and into areas like foreign exchange and financial inclusion. Regulation of stablecoins is evolving, with bipartisan support for the Clarity for Payment Stablecoins Act and Circle recently earning a Major Payment Institution License in Singapore.
