Sneeze unveils a rare nasal bot fly infection in a Greek patient
A 58-year-old outdoors worker on a Greek island developed facial pain and a severe cough, then sneezed out worm‑like larvae. ENT surgeons removed 10 larvae and a puparium from her maxillary sinuses and identified them as the sheep bot fly Oestrus ovis, causing nasal myiasis with pupation. The team noted that anatomic factors (deviated nasal septum) and a high larval burden may have allowed pupation in a human, which is biologically unusual. After surgical removal and nasal decongestants, the patient fully recovered; the report underscores that human O. ovis infections, while rare, can occur and should be considered in endemic areas.
