Lancashire teen survives sepsis after stomach-bug misdiagnosis and weeks in a coma
A 13-year-old girl from Nelson, Lancashire, was sent home from hospital with gastroenteritis-like symptoms, but about a month later she collapsed in septic shock caused by undiagnosed congenital bowel adhesions. She underwent emergency surgery, spent two weeks in an induced coma on life support, and later required further bowel surgery and a stoma, with two blood clots reported during recovery. Her mother is raising awareness about sepsis and has started fundraising to cover ongoing care as she moves from the PICU to a regular ward and continues rehabilitation.
