"Study Shows Growing Racial Disparities in Voter Turnout Post-Supreme Court Ruling"
A new study by the Brennan Center for Justice reveals that the voter turnout gap between white and nonwhite voters in the U.S. has been growing fastest in areas that lost federal voting protections following the Supreme Court's 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder. The decision effectively gutted Section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, leading to the passage of laws that made voting more difficult for people of color. The study found that the turnout gap between white and nonwhite voters in formerly covered areas grew by 9 percentage points, exacerbating racial disparities in voter turnout.
