"San Francisco Elections Reject Invented Chinese Names"
San Francisco has traditionally printed candidate names in Chinese characters, but the city is now cracking down on adopted names that some argue are overly flattering or culturally inappropriate. For the first time, the city has rejected Chinese names submitted by 22 candidates, mostly because they couldn't prove they had used the names for at least two years. Critics argue that some non-Chinese candidates have gained an advantage or engaged in cultural appropriation by using flowery phrases that have little to do with their actual names.
