Some patients with brain injuries who appear to be in a coma may actually be conscious but unable to physically respond, a condition known as cognitive motor dissociation (CMD). Currently, CMD diagnosis requires access to specialized labs, but researchers have now used structural MRI scans to identify specific brain lesion patterns in CMD patients. This could potentially serve as a screening tool to identify patients likely to have CMD, improving their chances of receiving appropriate care and recovery. Identifying CMD patients could also lead to targeted clinical trials and the development of technologies like brain-computer interfaces to help them communicate.
