A Tanzanian commission concluded that 518 people died in post-election unrest, including 197 shot, with over 2,000 injured; the panel did not name those responsible and called for further investigations. President Samia Suluhu Hassan described the violence as planned and fueled by trained actors, while the opposition labeled the report a whitewash. The inquiry cites economic, political, and social grievances, rejects mass-grave claims, and recommends reforms, a national day of mourning, a criminal inquiry, and a new constitution by 2028 ahead of the next election.

Death toll rises to 201 in Kenya starvation cult.

The death toll of a starvation cult in Kenya's Shakahola forest has risen to 201 after 22 more bodies were recovered. The cult leader, Paul Mackenzie, was accused of ordering his followers to starve themselves and their children to death so they could go to heaven before the end of the world. A commission of inquiry has been appointed by Kenyan President William Ruto to examine whether administrative or intelligence lapses contributed to the deaths. Mackenzie has not commented publicly on the accusations against him nor has he been required to enter a plea to any criminal charge.
