Governor signs bill banning community oversight boards for police into law.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has signed a bill to disband community oversight boards, which operate as civilian oversight of police departments. The new law allows oversight boards to exist only at the behest of government entities. In Nashville, for example, Metro Nashville Council must adopt an ordinance by a two-thirds vote at two separate meetings. The state's current model was approved by Tennessee voters in 2018.
