Monfils, 40, Becomes US Open 40+ Match-Winner, Echoing Connors
Gael Monfils, aged 40, defeated Adolfo Vallejo at the US Open to become only the second man in the last four decades to win a US Open main-draw match at 40 or older, a feat previously achieved by Jimmy Connors in 1992. He advances to face Learner Tien in the second round; Tien beat Nuno Borges in the opener and has shown strong form this year, including a prior Canadian Open meeting with Monfils where Tien won. Monfils hasn’t reached the US Open third round since 2021, while Tien has already posted his best New York result this season.
