Firework Safety: Protecting Pets, Property, and People

The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission's 2022 Fireworks Annual Report reveals that firecrackers, sparklers, illegal firecrackers, Roman candles, and rockets (non-bottle) are the most dangerous fireworks, causing the highest number of injuries. Males, particularly those aged 15-44, are more likely to be injured. Safety tips include not allowing children to handle fireworks, using legally made fireworks, keeping water nearby, lighting fireworks one at a time, and avoiding alcohol or drugs while using fireworks. Hand and finger injuries are the most common, and incidents are on the rise, with an increase of about 535 injuries per year between 2007 and 2022.
