Wildfires force unprecedented evacuation of thousands in Western Canada.
Alberta has declared a provincial state of emergency due to unprecedented wildfires that have forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. As of Saturday, there were 110 active wildfires across the province, with 36 out of control. The hot, dry spring has created ideal conditions for wildfires, and so far this year, 43,000 hectares have burned. The contingency fund of C$1.5 billion ($1.12 billion) has been put aside for emergency management. Oil producers, Whitecap Resources and Pembina Pipeline Corp, are monitoring the situation closely. Voters in Alberta will still go to the polls on May 29 to elect a new government.
