Memphis Council Postpones Data Center Moratorium Vote Amid Chaotic Protests and Fistfight
Memphis City Council postponed a vote on a proposed 12-month moratorium on new data centers to October 20, 2026, after a chaotic meeting involving protests, a physical altercation, and internal council clashes. The decision, voted 7-5, follows concerns over the environmental and infrastructural impact of massive facilities like SpaceXAI's Colossus supercomputer in the region. While some council members and residents demand a pause to assess impacts on water, power, and air quality, opponents warn that delays could drive investment to neighboring counties. The incident highlights growing national tensions over AI infrastructure, with local officials divided on balancing economic benefits against community concerns.
