
Former NFL DB Alphonso Smith Jr. dies at 40, remembered for ACC interception record
Former NFL defensive back Alphonso Smith Jr. died in Florida at age 40, reportedly by suicide. A Wake Forest standout who set the ACC career interceptions mark with 21 and was inducted into the Wake Forest athletic hall of fame in 2021, Smith was drafted 37th overall in 2009 by the Denver Broncos. He played 42 NFL games from 2009-2012 with the Broncos and Lions, registering 88 tackles and eight interceptions (five in 2010). Details of his death were not immediately released.
