The Education Department has erased $44 billion in student loan balances by reviewing payments made by borrowers who should have had their debt erased due to years of payments. This includes lower-income borrowers on income-driven repayment plans and those working in public sector jobs. The review has resulted in the recalculation of payments for borrowers with Direct or Federal Family Education Loans, wiping out balances for over 900,000 people. The agency will continue to search for eligible borrowers and expects to complete the review by July. Borrowers with loans not held by the Education Department must consolidate their loans into a new Direct Consolidation Loan by April 30, 2024, to be considered for the review and potential debt forgiveness.
