Illinois state investigation uncovers 50-plus decomposed remains at Chicago funeral home
More than 50 human remains were found inside the South Chicago Chapel funeral home during a state licensing investigation by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Some bodies were unrefrigerated and in deplorable conditions, prompting a police inquiry. The license of funeral director Johanna Morgan has been suspended while investigators identify the remains with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and notify families; investigators say no criminal charges have been announced yet and the case remains ongoing.
