"Former US Soldier Arrested for Attempting to Sell Defense Secrets to China"
A former U.S. Army sergeant, Joseph Daniel Schmidt, has been arrested for allegedly attempting to deliver defense secrets to Chinese authorities. Schmidt, who had access to top-secret and secret national security information during his service, sought to provide intelligence training and practices, information about accessing Army computers, and classified information to China. Schmidt traveled to China and Turkey after leaving active service, and in Turkey, he emailed the Chinese consulate offering to share information he learned during his career. He conducted internet research on defection and extradition, and during his time in China, he created documents containing classified information and took photos of Army-issued computer cards. Schmidt faces charges that could result in up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
