Jakov Milatovic Wins Montenegro Presidential Election, Ending Djukanovic Era.
Montenegro's President and leader of the Democratic Party of Socialists, Milo Djukanovic, lost the presidential election run-off to Jakov Milatovic, a 36-year-old newcomer. Djukanovic had been in power for 32 years, making him the longest-serving leader in Europe. Milatovic won by a large margin, with preliminary results putting him on 60.1% of the counted votes. Djukanovic conceded defeat and praised Montenegro's choice. The former ruling DPS continued its downward trend among voters, as Djukanovic was their last senior state official following the loss of parliamentary elections in August 2020.
