Cyclosporiasis outbreak widens to 31 states, including California
Public health officials say cyclosporiasis, a parasite that causes explosive diarrhea, is under investigation across 31 states, including California. Since May 1, the CDC has logged 843 confirmed domestic cases and more than 1,500 under review, with about 86 hospitalizations and no deaths reported. Investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the foodborne illness, but no single grower or type of produce has been linked yet. California reports 1–10 cases. Preventive steps include rinsing produce, preferring frozen over fresh when possible, and cooking foods to reduce risk.
