The European Medicines Agency has endorsed the use of fexinidazole, an oral medication, for the treatment of acute sleeping sickness, a disease spread by tsetse flies and previously treated with toxic drugs. This new treatment has shown a 97% cure rate in clinical trials and is a safer alternative to the previous arsenic-based therapy, which had a fatality rate of up to 10% from the treatment itself. The approval of fexinidazole, which has been used for chronic sleeping sickness, could significantly improve outcomes for patients and aid in controlling potential outbreaks.
