Deadly Gunmen Attack Claims 11 Lives in Eastern Iraq
Gunmen believed to be from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) killed 11 civilians and injured several others in a bomb and gun attack in Muqdadiyah, Diyala province, eastern Iraq. The attack targeted relatives of a local MP, with a roadside bomb exploding and gunmen opening fire on rescuers and bystanders. Despite ISIL being largely wiped out, sporadic violence by their cells continues in the region. The governor of Diyala denounced the attack and called for increased vigilance against dormant ISIL cells. The president of the Kurdish region called for greater cooperation between Iraqi forces and the international coalition against ISIL.
