Rising Incomes Drive Homebuyer Wealth
The income of a typical homebuyer in the United States surged to $107,000 from $88,000 last year, exacerbating the worsening home affordability crisis, according to a report from the National Association of Realtors. The 22% increase, the highest on record, makes homeownership out of reach for many families, especially considering the median income is around $75,000. Rising mortgage rates and low inventory have made buying a home more difficult, leading to larger downpayments and competitive bidding wars. Despite the challenges, first-time homebuyers made up 32% of all buyers, with higher household incomes and increased reliance on financial assets. The demographics of homebuyers are shifting, with a decrease in married couples and an increase in single buyers and diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.
