DSA-LA Backs Raman in Los Angeles Mayoral Race

The Los Angeles chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America endorsed Councilmember Nithya Raman for mayor after an online vote among its members, giving her a left-leaning boost as she challenges incumbent Karen Bass in the November election; about 1,500 ballots were cast from a DSA-LA pool of more than 6,000 members, with 937 in favor of endorsement, 484 against, and 52 abstentions, and the endorsement is part of DSA-LA’s Shake Up LA slate highlighting Raman’s alignment on renter protections and housing policy while noting concerns about her reliability on DSA priorities.

Raman’s LA mayor bid tests her socialist ties as DSA-LA weighs endorsement

Nithya Raman’s bid for Los Angeles mayor is testing her ties to the local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA-LA) as members vote by September on whether to endorse her. The local DSA previously censured Raman for seeking endorsement from a pro-Israel group and her policy stance, including mansion tax changes, have fueled internal disagreement. An endorsement would provide volunteers and organizing power but not guaranteed political clout, while opponents worry the DSA label could hinder her appeal to centrist Democrats in a deep-blue city. Regardless, Raman will be known as the “DSA candidate” in the race, with Bass’s camp likely to press her leftward associations.
