Global Military Spending Reaches Record High Amid Insecurity and Conflict.
World military spending reached an all-time high of $2.24tn in 2022, with a 13% rise in Europe, the steepest in at least 30 years, due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The United States remained the world's largest military spender, followed by China and Japan. SIPRI said most of the rise in global military spending was linked to a deteriorating security environment, with states bolstering military strength in response to perceived threats. Military expenditure in Asia and Oceania amounted to $575bn, with tensions rising over Taiwan, the South China Sea, and the Senkaku or Diaoyu Islands.
