Electra bets big on Ohio factory to push EL9 hybrid-electric aircraft
Electra plans an $850 million first aircraft factory in Springfield, Ohio to build the EL9 Ultra Short, a nine‑passenger hybrid‑electric plane that can take off in about 150 feet; the plant will eventually produce up to 800 aircraft per year and create roughly 2,000 jobs, even before the EL9 has flown. The aircraft is still in development and pursuing FAA Part 23 certification, with a first flight expected in late 2027 or early 2028. Construction of the 96‑acre site will begin next year in two phases (400/year then 800/year). The location near SkyVision and Wright‑Patterson AFB supports testing and talent, and Electra has a large order book and LOIs backed by Honeywell, Safran, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, plus a Safran TG600 generator deal.
