Shedd Aquarium Confirms Death of Rescued Beluga Peekachu Amid Ongoing Marineland Rehoming
Peekachu, a 23-year-old beluga whale rescued from Marineland Canada, died suddenly at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago on August 25, 2026. The whale had arrived on August 13 as part of a major international rehoming effort to relocate approximately 30 belugas from the shuttered Canadian park. While Peekachu initially showed signs of recovery, she died after bloodwork revealed severe dehydration. The Shedd Aquarium is conducting a necropsy to determine the cause of death, while other facilities continue to monitor the remaining relocated animals.
