EU Policymakers Finalize Rules on AI Models, Debate Law Enforcement
EU policymakers have reached a provisional agreement on the rules for regulating powerful AI models under the AI Act, but disagreements remain on the law enforcement chapter. The agreement includes the exclusion of free and open-source software from regulation unless they pose a high-risk or prohibited application. The negotiations will continue on issues such as the national security exemption and the application of the regulation to AI systems already on the market. The AI Act also establishes an AI Office to enforce the provisions and bans certain applications deemed to pose an unacceptable risk.
