A new study explores the face inversion effect (FIE) by examining the recognition abilities of Claudio Vieira de Oliveira, a Brazilian man with a congenital joint disorder that causes his head to be rotated 180 degrees. Researchers found that both evolution and experience play a role in our ability to perceive faces, as Vieira de Oliveira performed similarly on upright and inverted faces. The study also showed that he recognized "Thatcherized" faces well, suggesting the involvement of a different visual mechanism.
