Kodak Develops New Film Stock for 'Oppenheimer' Cinematography

Director Christopher Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema pushed the boundaries of cinematography in the biopic thriller "Oppenheimer" by using large-format IMAX cameras to capture the complexity of the characters' faces. The film was divided into separate perspectives and timelines, with Oppenheimer's story shot in color and Admiral Lewis Strauss' story in black-and-white. To achieve the desired intimacy, van Hoytema had to adapt lenses and shoot close-ups in IMAX, which was technically challenging. Kodak created a new 65mm black-and-white film stock specifically for the film, requiring collaboration with Panavision and IMAX to re-engineer the cameras. The film is playing in a record number of 70mm IMAX theaters worldwide.
