Rebuilding Delays and Forgotten Residents: Challenges Faced After Lahaina Wildfire
Survivors of the deadly fire in Lahaina, Maui, may have to wait up to two years before they can rebuild their homes due to the slow process of clearing the land of hazards. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working to address the affordable housing crisis on the island and is considering leasing entire apartment or condominium complexes and building modular units. Currently, roughly 7,600 residents are temporarily housed in hotels, and FEMA is providing rental assistance. However, concerns remain about the lack of affordable housing options and the potential for residents to be forced to leave the island. The EPA has removed toxic chemicals from 50% of the ash-covered landscape, and progress is being made in removing hazardous debris.
