Swiss tourist jailed in Bali over Nyepi insult
A Swiss tourist in Bali was sentenced to one year in prison for insulting the Hindu Day of Silence Nyepi via social media posts. The Denpasar court found he violated Indonesia’s new criminal code by posting after staff had warned him of Nyepi restrictions that require residents and visitors to stay home and observe silence. He had posted videos boasting about defying the rules and called Nyepi “crazy,” prompting condemnation; he says the posts were not meant to offend and he apologizes. Prosecutions of foreigners over Nyepi are uncommon, but authorities say such posts offend Balinese people and faith.
