"Ex-Army Sergeant Indicted for Espionage: Attempted Classified Information Transfer to China"
A former U.S. Army sergeant, Joseph Daniel Schmidt, has been indicted for unlawfully retaining classified information and attempting to deliver it to China's security services. Schmidt allegedly reached out to China's consulate in Turkey and later directly to China's security services, offering classified information. While in Hong Kong, he continued his efforts to pass classified intelligence to the Chinese and retained a device that allows access to secure military computer networks, offering it to Chinese authorities. Schmidt was arrested at the San Francisco airport and faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years for each count.
