Holiday Shopping Outlook: Retailers Brace for Weak Sales Amidst Cautious Guidance and Gloomy Forecasts
Several retailers, including Tapestry, BJ's Wholesale Club, Best Buy, Nordstrom, and Hanesbrands, have issued cautious or disappointing fourth-quarter outlooks, citing factors such as inflation, reduced consumer discretionary income, and declining demand. This has cast doubt on the upcoming holiday shopping season, raising concerns about the overall health of the economy. The National Retail Federation predicts slower growth in holiday spending of around 3% to 4% compared to the pandemic-induced growth of previous years. Many retailers are approaching the season with caution, with a majority of earnings forecasts falling short of expectations. Walmart, for example, lowered its outlook after observing weakening consumer spending. Despite some positive results, retailers like Dick's Sporting Goods tempered their optimism, emphasizing caution due to the macroeconomic environment and consumer challenges.
