Mass evacuation as wildfire ravages South Korean coastal city.

A wildfire fueled by strong winds burned parts of Gangneung, a South Korean coastal city, destroying around 70 homes and other buildings. More than 400 residents were evacuated to facilities that included an ice-skating arena and a middle school gym. There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths. Over 2,300 firefighters and 300 vehicles were dispatched to fight the blaze, which covered more than 914 acres. The high winds made it difficult to deploy water-dropping aircraft, and at least a dozen passenger trains were canceled. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol instructed officials to deploy all available equipment and personnel to swiftly extinguish the wildfire and evacuate residents to prevent the loss of life.

The fire was extinguished after eight hours and nearly 3,000 firefighters, helped by rain that began in the afternoon. The fire was likely sparked by a tree that fell over a powerline after being snapped by strong winds.
