Macron and Carney Forge Strategic Alliance in Saint-Pierre to Counter US Pressure
French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Saint-Pierre and Miquelon to strengthen bilateral ties amid rising tensions with the United States. The leaders pledged cooperation on climate change, energy, and democratic values, while discussing Canada’s potential status as the EU’s first associate member. Macron emphasized the strategic importance of the French territory, which sits near the US and Arctic, and highlighted the need for Canadian liquefied natural gas exports to Europe. The visit followed Donald Trump’s controversial social media post depicting North America under a US flag, prompting diplomatic efforts to reinforce sovereignty and trade independence.
