The New York Red Bulls have parted ways with manager Gerhard Struber, with assistant coach Troy Lesesne taking over through the end of the 2023 season. Struber came under criticism in April for not removing a Red Bulls player from a game after he was alleged to have directed a racial slur at an opposition player. The Red Bulls are currently at the bottom of MLS Eastern Conference with nine points after 11 matches.
The New York Red Bulls and Gerhard Struber have mutually agreed to part ways, with assistant coach Bernd Eibler also departing the club. Troy Lesesne has been named as the new head coach through the end of the 2023 MLS season. Struber helped guide the Red Bulls to the playoffs in '21 and '22, setting the current active streak for most playoff appearances by an MLS club. Lesesne previously served as Head Coach and Technical Director of the United Soccer League Championship club New Mexico United before joining RBNY in 2022.
The New York Red Bulls issued an apology for the "unacceptable events" that occurred during their match with the San Jose Earthquakes. Dante Vanzeir apologized for his language and actions during the game and will accept any punishment handed down by Major League Soccer and the club. Gerhard Struber acknowledged that he made a mistake in not immediately removing Vanzeir from the game. The organization is committed to providing resources to educate players and staff and rebuilding trust within the community.
