Giants finish WV training week with standout plays and late goal-line drama

Giants coach John Harbaugh called West Virginia week the 'big week of camp' and urged a strong finish after a day that highlighted Abdul Carter as a disruptive edge rusher, a stout run defense across all units, and a sharp passing attack led by Jaxson Dart and Jameis Winston. Receivers like Dalen Cambre and Calvin Austin flashed, kickers Ben Sauls and Dominic Zvada split long-range reps, and a notable late 1-yard-line drill ended with Dart finding Darius Slayton for a TD after players pressed to finish. Brandon Allen and tackle Ryan Schernecke had rough moments, while Harbaugh mildly relented to the players’ push for the final play. The team will practice 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m. before Sunday off and return Monday at Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin emphasized the importance of maintaining energy and urgency during practice, wanting his team to work hard both before and after off days. The practice included goal-line drills, 7-Shots, and the "flat & now tackle drill" to prepare the players for game situations and showcase their versatility. The offense dominated in the 7-Shots drill, winning 6-1, while the "flat & now tackle drill" provided a competitive atmosphere between the offense and defense. Tomlin also highlighted the need to evaluate players' capabilities, particularly in open-field tackling and goal-line situations. Overall, Tomlin was pleased with the back-and-forth competition and viewed practice as a platform for teaching and learning.
