
Jason Heyward Retires After 16-Season MLB Run
Jason Heyward, a five-time Gold Glove outfielder and 2016 World Series champion, announced his retirement after 16 MLB seasons. Debuting with the Braves in 2010, he later starred for the Cardinals and Cubs, signed a record eight-year, $184 million Cubs contract, and finished with a late-career resurgence with the Dodgers before a 2025 Padres release. Renowned for elite defense (159 Defensive Runs Saved), he ends with a .255/.306/.408 line, 186 homers, 126 steals, 306 doubles, 41 triples, 879 runs and 730 RBI, plus 34.8 FanGraphs WAR and 41.2 Baseball-Reference WAR, earning over $211 million. He’ll pursue mentoring and other roles in baseball going forward.
