Twitter's Compliance with Government Demands Increases with Elon Musk's Influence

Twitter has complied with hundreds more government orders for censorship or surveillance under Elon Musk's ownership, according to self-reported data. The company received a total of 971 requests from governments and courts between October 27, 2022, and today, and fully complied in 808 of those requests, and partially complied in 154 other cases. The figures show a steep increase in the portion of requests that Twitter complies with in full, jumping to 83% after Musk's takeover. The bulk of the recent requests come from countries that have recently passed restrictive speech laws, most notably India, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates.

As Netflix expands in Southeast Asia, it faces repeated censorship demands from governments seeking to control what their citizens watch and hear. Netflix has already accommodated at least a dozen government requests that titles be removed from the service, according to company reports, and been caught in the middle of heated debates over how the company should be regulated. These challenges come just as Netflix looks increasingly to Asia, and specifically to the emerging economies of Southeast Asia, to fuel growth.
